They provide variation, can motivate and stimulate participants and because of the visual and auditory ways of bringing messages they are indispensable for good learning in an online course. At the same time, as with other media, they must be used in a well-considered way and must always serve a higher goal: that of the MOOC objectives. It remains a challenge to design multimedia from the instructional design of a MOOC, while at the same time applying video-, multimedia- and storytelling principles. Above all this we want to create a visual line or a story across the MOOC.
At KU Leuven we use our own version of the ABC learning design methodology and build upon this in creating multimedia and other learning material. Through a series of workshops following upon the ABC design and 'inspirational' material we try to provide our course teams with sufficient information to make the MOOC a didactical high-impact course but also keep them open-minded and think out of the box to create powerful multimedia.
In this interactive online workshop we will take the participants on the same journey as we go with our course teams. We let the participants reflect upon the link between learning activities and multimedia. Throughout all of this, we give many examples of our own experiences and provide opportunities to exchange with others.
